A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
