Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
