Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
