We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
